I’ll admit that I stepped inside Jaine Cottage on a whim; its private parking lot advertised it as a welcome place to spend a few minutes between other engagements. The building — small and, true to its name, cottagelike — is tastefully decorated in a style that looked lifted from the pages of a wedding magazine; light wood and white accents, little pastel flowers on every table.
You might not recognize the name, but I’ll wager you’ll recognize the parent company - Matthews Winery. The owners of this Woodinville staple brand have established several sub-brands including Tenor, Blackboard and, lately, Jaine. The Jaine brand specifically focuses on white wine and rosé, a unique offering in Woodinville’s current scope.
At the adorable cottage, the $20 tasting includes five pours; one “welcome pour” of the server’s choosing, and four of the customer’s selection. On offer are multiple Chardonnays, Rhone-style rosés and Sauvignons Blanc; the quirky “Blanc de Cabernet Franc” (a white wine produced from the notoriously vegetal red Bordeaux varietal) would be the pour of choice for an adventurous palate. A Riesling and a sparkling (Blanc de Blanc of course; winemaker Ali Mayfield isn’t shy about her love of Chardonnay) round out the lineup. This choose-your-own-adventure style of tasting isn’t for everyone, but tasting room staff are available to make recommendations when required.
Bottles range in price from $24-$65 and include several single-vineyard productions from such names as Stoneridge and Ravenscliff. Like their parent producer, Jaine Cottage does not own or maintain any vineyards, so they are free to source from the Columbia Valley broadly. For the true Washington wine nerd, Jaine is a notable stop rooted in plenty of history, and the wines speak for themselves. What really sets Jaine apart, in addition to the exclusion of reds from the menu, is its quaint setting—pleasant on any day but exceptionally nice on a summer day when the windows can be opened to the patio.
Reservations are strongly recommended for all tasters, and groups bigger than 6 are generally not accommodated. Minors are allowed inside, and dogs are allowed on the patio; Jaine Cottage does not serve food, so outside food is welcome (though of course outside wines can’t be consumed on the premises). For white wine lovers, Jaine is an excellent choice; if you’d like to visit the cottage, let us know in your pre-tour survey and we will make arrangements with the tasting room staff.
Salut, and enjoy Woodinville!
