If you’ve been to the Hollywood District even once, you’ve seen it. If you don’t know where the Hollywood District is, ask anyone in town.

“You mean over by the schoolhouse?”

It’s not currently a schoolhouse, of course, though that’s what it was built for in 1912. In the intervening century it’s served as a dance hall, event venue, and even a roller rink. Now, it's the home of Maryhill Winery (on the main and upstairs levels—Alexandria Nicole is housed in the basement of the same building).

Founded in 1999 by Craig and Vicki Leuthold, Maryhill Winery has become a giant on the Washington landscape. Maryhill is named after an Eastern Washington community known for its isolated Museum of Art (established by turn-of-the-century titan of industry Sam Hill and his wife, Mary). The winery also operates a flagship tasting room in its hometown, overlooking the Columbia River Gorge.

Maryhill is renowned for its wide variety of accessible wines and is locally famous for its case discounts. They offer a staggering 60+ bottles for sale, from staples like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon to rarities such as Mourvèdre to oddballs like Muscat Canelli and Albariño.

It's not just the wine that might draw you to Maryhill; the tasting room also offers a robust food menu featuring sandwiches, salads, and shareable plates crafted to complement the wines. While an increasing number of wineries offer a cheese plate or charcuterie box, Maryhill is equipped to offer a complete dinner or lunch, not just a snack. For those with such proclivities, Maryhill also serves beer and hard cider by the bottle and can.

At the time of my last visit the tasting consisted of seven pours — one of the longest lists in Woodinville — opening with a high-value Sémillon and two rosés (a blended reserve rosé of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault and a varietally bottled rosé of Sangiovese). Next came one of the few Zins in town (Ryan Patrick offers another), a vineyard series Tempranillo, a reserve Sangiovese and a vineyard series Cab. I also enjoyed a plate of sautéed mushrooms that complemented the reds immaculately.

“So,” I hear you saying, “You mentioned case discounts?”

Usually something of a secret-menu item, case discounts are no private matter at Maryhill, with occasionally outrageous deals like 2019 Sémillon for $8/bottle. Featured on the menu, website and around the tasting room, Maryhill definitely wants a place at your dining table every night, and for anyone buying for an event or occasion the deals are sometimes too good to pass up.

Bottles range in price from $17-56 (not including case discounts) and run the varietal and character gamut. Reservations are neither required nor accepted except for large groups; food is amply available across dietary needs (including vegan, vegetarian, and dairy- and gluten-free). If you’d like to visit a generous winery in a historic space, let us know in your pre-tour survey and we will arrange to visit it.

Salut, and enjoy Woodinville!
